I have used a couple of different watermelon cutters, and a lot of them work on the same principle. What I have found to be the biggest difference in them is that some of them are just a piece of aluminum or metal. I am the first to admit that a lot of things make my hands ache anymore. Part of it is just getting older, and part of it is from hereditary arthritis. This watermelon cutter has a plastic coating around the part that you hold onto. This makes it much easier for me to use it. Some of the others felt like they were cutting into my hands, or would put too much pressure against my fingers. I am on the computer – email and updating records, spreadsheets, etc. all day long – nearly every day – so having my hands hurt more than they do already is not something that I want. 
I got this one to be part of a gift for either my mom or one of my sisters, and they will appreciate the silicone handles as much as I do. It also has a bonus set of Fruit Scoopers. There is a melon baller, and a couple of smaller slicers that would work well on cake or melons also. They would also work great on Avocados too.
